The Importance of Omega-3’s

One of the most important things a person can do for themselves if they want to lose weight and build muscle is to incorporate Omega-3’s into their diet.  This can be done either by eating lots of cold water fish or by supplementing with Fish oil.

The most important thing to look for an Omega-3’s is the level of DHA and EPA in either the capsules or the liquid you are taking.  For women a higher level of EPA is important.  Men, on the other hand, new much higher level of DHA.  The DHA found in fish oil is important for the bodies production of testosterone both in men and women.  However, men on average need almost twice as much DHA then EPA.  The problem is most of the fish oil found the market has a much higher concentration of EPA.  There are several brands they do offer higher levels of DHA over EPA.  My recommendation would be that you purchase a brand of fish oil that has a higher concentration of DHA than EPA.

Here are just a few of the ways that Omega threes are beneficial  to your health:

Cardiovascular Health

• DHA and EPA help modulate a healthy steady heartbeat
• DHA and EPA help maintain blood vessels to support circulation throughout the body
• DHA and EPA may support artery wall elasticity and may favorably influence C-reactive protein levels
• Dietary intake of EPA and DHA is now being recognized as a safe and effective method for normalizing triglyceride levels

Brain and Nerve Function
• As a vital component of our brain tissue and neurons, DHA supports cognitive function
• By improving membrane fluidity, DHA may help support nerve transmission processes
• Increased levels of DHA in the brain serve to protect and enhance the lifetime of neurons

Healthy Vision
• DHA is found in high amounts in the retina and is important for normal vision

Immune System Health
• DHA and EPA are required for balanced eicosanoid formation, which supports balanced and healthy immune responses

Healthy Joints & Movement
• DHA and EPA support healthy joints and comfortable movement by promoting healthy levels of eicosanoids, including: prostaglandins, prostacyclins, leukotrienes and thromboxanes.

These are just a few of the benefits of using Omega threes.  Specifically, if you are strength training you need to be incorporating DHA and EPA found in fish oil in your diet.
